Baseball Set for 2017 Season

Head Coach Rich Billings enters his second season at the helm of the Lakehawks and with a year of recruiting under his belt, looks to have a bounce back season. LSSC finished 2016 with a record of 12-33, 4-19. The team hit .283 and averaged just under six runs per game.

The program will welcome back 13 returning players from last year’s squad. Jay Prather returns as one of the team’s top hitters boasting a .360 average with 20 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .422. Prather earned second team All Mid-Florida accolades during his freshman year. Left handed pitcher, Josh Jimenez will hold down the top spot in the rotation. Jimenez, who has already inked a scholarship to N.C. State, racked up 38 strikeouts in 30.1 innings before going down with a season ending injury.

Tucker Smith and Matt Martin will also be arms to watch in 2017. Smith led the Lakehawks in innings pitched in 2016 with 11 starts that included one complete game. With a 4-1 record during his rookie campaign, Martin looks to elevate his game after an injury took away part of his season. He will enter the year as the No. 3 starter. After finishing fourth on the team with 24 RBIs, Jesse Getford is ready for a breakout sophomore season. The third baseman is coming off a season where he hit .325 in 35 games.

Coach Billings brought in 12 new players, including five incoming freshman and seven transfers. The transfers include Jarred Neal (South Florida State College), Kyle Wiseman (University of North Alabama), Ray Santiago (Clarendon College, TX), Patrick Finkelstein (College of Charleston, SC), Austin Butler (Weatherford College, TX), Jason Baita (Daytona State College) and Brandon Suttles (Faulkner University, AL).

“I’m really looking forward to watching this group of players compete,” Said coach Billings. “We have a roster with 18 sophomores, so we are returning a ton of experience and maturity.”

When asked about the pitching staff, coach Billings said, “Our pitching staff has improved immensely. Josh Jimenez & Matt Martin will be two really big pieces of the puzzle. They both have great stuff and I feel like our guys know we have a shot to win every time they’re on the mound.”

“I believe our bats will pick up where they left off with Jay Prather, Jesse Getford, and Jeremy Migliori anchoring our offense.” Billings added. “They have the potential to not only score a lot of runs but to drive in a ton as well. We will definitely rely on them heavily to keep us moving in the right direction offensively.”

Baseball will get started Friday, January 27 as they host Polk State for a 3:00 pm start.
