TEDxLSSC, an independently organized event licensed by TED, will commence in just over two weeks on the Leesburg Campus of Lake-Sumter State College.
“TEDx is more than just a series of live, short talks,” explains Amber Karlins, one of the co-organizers for the event. “It’s a day of events. At TEDxLSSC, in addition to our wonderful and engaging speakers, we will also have live demos and performances, art exhibitions, interactive activities, and innovative technology.”
TEDxLSSC 2019, on February 15, will feature a full program of speakers and performers. Tickets include an all-access pass to the day’s events and activities, lunch, a gift bag, and admission to the after party.
This year’s speaker lineup includes a variety of topics all based on the theme of Transformation.
Here are just three of the great speakers who are participating:
- Merry Lynn Morris, USF Professor of Dance, will be speaking about disability and dance. Morris’ talk will conclude with a performance by internationally renowned wheelchair dancer Dwayne Scheuneman.
- Aaron Thiessen, an engineer who has spent the last three years building and testing unmanned aerial vehicles for urgent deliveries in difficult or remote areas, will focus on ways in which we can use first-world design to solve serious problems in the developing world.
- Inspired by his father, a career soldier, and his own work as a biologist and science professor, Steve Clark will explore the biological basis for altruism in his talk “Why Take a Bullet for Someone?”
This year’s TEDxLSSC will also feature a performance from Lake County’s first poet laureate Laura Ross.
“TEDxLSSC will give students, faculty, staff, and the community an opportunity to interact and dialog while being exposed to new and exciting ideas,” said Heather Elmatti, a co-organizer for the event.
Tickets are $15 for LSSC students, $25 for LSSC employees, and $40 for community members. Tickets can be purchased online at tedxlssc.com through February 1st.
