Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was at Lake-Sumter State College’s Sumter Center to announce Florida’s first vaccine pod offering the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
DeSantis said that Sumter County is one of the Florida counties with the highest percentage of seniors in its population.
“They [Sumter County] have the highest percentage of seniors, of any county in the state of Florida — 58% of all the residents of Sumter are 65 or older,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis announced that the state would cross the 3 million vaccinated seniors this week. “We’ve got almost 60% of seniors have gotten shots in Florida,” he said.
The state-supported vaccination site on LSSC’s Sumter Center will offer 1,000 vaccinations each day through Friday, March 12.
Located near the center of Sumter County, LSSC’s Sumter Center provides a central location for seniors across the county to receive a vaccination.
During February, Global Medical Response was operating a vaccination site at the LSSC Sumter Center offering over 1,000 vaccinations per day.
