Coronavirus/COVID-19 Update: Courses moving to online delivery (3/23-4/05) and other updates

The College continues to review available information and recommendations from the CDC and state health officials. Our top priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. Dr. Sidor and the College’s leadership team met today and has developed an action plan in response to the threat of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Out of an abundance of caution and based on current public health recommendations, Lake-Sumter State College is implementing the following measures to reduce the risk of exposure for our community.

Beginning after spring break all courses will be conducted remotely until at least April 5th (3/23/20 – 4/05/20). Faculty will communicate course specific information with their students. Faculty will conduct their office hours virtually during this time.

When we return from spring break, our campuses will remain open but with reduced staffing (3/23/20 – 4/05/20). Our normal hours of operations will not change. Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Academic Advising, and the Cashier’s Office will be open for in-person support from 10am-6:30pm on Monday and 10am-4:30pm Tuesday through Friday. Academic and Career advising is moving to all virtual advising (3/23/20 – 4/05/20). Advising appointments can be made in Starfish.

Online services and resources, including Canvas, LOIS, Libraries, and virtual tutoring, will remain available and will not be impacted by this staffing change.

Most large scale events have been cancelled or postponed between now and April 6. Event organizers will communicate about their individual events.

Continuing Education and Corporate Training courses will continue as scheduled, unless otherwise notified.

Employees should expect additional communication from their supervisor regarding scheduling changes.

We know that these decisions are being made quickly and significantly impact our community. Please know that the College will work to support students, faculty, and staff through these changes. Emergency Deans are available to assist students who may be experiencing distress or hardships. Students can seek assistance from an Emergency Dean by emailing deanofstudents@lssc.edu.

We expect to return to regular operations, with full staffing, on Monday, April 6. However, we will continue to review the available information and recommendations to determine if an adjustment to that timeline is necessary.

The College will continue to provide detailed updates on its response and changes that impact our campus community through email and at www.lssc.edu/coronavirus.
