Florida Board of Nursing Chair, Dr. Jose Castillo III, to Speak at Lake-Sumter State College’s Nursing Pinning Ceremony

Lake-Sumter State College proudly announces the Florida Board of Nursing Chair, Dr. Jose Castillo III as our distinguished speaker at our Nursing Pinning ceremony tonight. Dr. Castillo is a highly accomplished nurse, educator, and advocate for the nursing profession.

The Nursing Pinning ceremony is a time-honored tradition that celebrates the graduation of nursing students and recognizes their achievements. During the ceremony, nursing graduates are presented with a nursing pin, which symbolizes their induction into nursing. A pinning ceremony is a meaningful event for nursing students, as it marks the end of their academic journey and the beginning of their professional careers.

Dr. Castillo has an impressive academic background, earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Visayas State University, his Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia from Wolford College, and his PhD in Instructional Design and Technology from Keiser University. He has been a full-time Nurse Anesthesia faculty member for over 16 years and holds a tenured associate professor appointment at Texas Wesleyan University.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Castillo is a passionate advocate for the nursing profession at the local, state, national, and international levels. He has held leadership positions in professional organizations such as the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, where he served as past president. Currently, he serves as the Chair of the Florida Board of Nursing and is a ballot candidate for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Board of Directors. His contributions to the nursing profession were recognized when he was awarded the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology Ira P. Gunn Outstanding Professional Award in 2021.

Dr. Castillo’s dedication to nursing is not limited to his professional involvement and achievements. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Castillo demonstrated his leadership qualities by utilizing his contacts within the Florida Department of Emergency Management to organize over 3,200 registered nurses, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and nurse practitioners to distribute vaccines to the 67 counties in Florida at 103 vaccine sites, with over 1 million volunteer hours. Dr. Castillo’s leadership and ability to know what to do next allowed him to mobilize a large group of healthcare professionals to make a significant impact during the pandemic.

We are honored to have Dr. Castillo as our distinguished speaker at tonight’s Nursing Pinning ceremony. His accomplishments, advocacy, and leadership make him an inspiration to all nursing students who will be graduating and beginning their own careers in the healthcare industry.
