Lake-Sumter State College’s Upward Bound Program provides high school students from Lake County an opportunity to gain access to higher education. The program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to motivate and serve first-generation college bound students from modest income households. The purpose of the project is to encourage students to achieve academic success in school, graduate, and enter post-secondary education.

Each year the Upward Bound program serves 63 students from Eustis, Mount Dora, Tavares, and Umatilla High Schools.

Participants explore the facets of college life in many different ways.

They attend Saturday sessions bi-monthly and receive weekly support and tutoring in core subjects throughout the academic year. Participants also visit colleges and universities throughout Florida to gain more exposure to the quality schools that the state has to offer. Educational advisement, career counseling, test preparation strategies, job shadowing, and mentoring are also offered to all participants.

The most important component of the project is its six-week summer program where students take college preparatory courses at Lake-Sumter State College for four-weeks and live for two weeks in the dorms of Saint Leo University. This experience offers students the opportunity to explore college life first hand, make new friends, and establish lasting partnerships with faculty and staff. LSSC’s Upward Bound program is committed to the academic needs of its students to ensure that they maintain success in school, graduate, and move on to pursue a higher education.
