The Lineworker Bootcamp is a state-certified training program designed to prepare students for pre-apprentice opportunities with electrical power companies, based on their hiring preferences for entry-level workers.

Students will spend three weeks in CDL training to obtain a Class A CDL. They will also learn to use industry hand tools, safely climb utility poles, hang transformers, operate bucket and digger trucks, run above and below ground power lines, perform first aid/CPR, and receive OSHA safety training, among other skills.

The class structure is approximately 25% classroom instruction and 75% field training.

The Sumter Campus features a 2.5-acre utility pole field, a dedicated classroom with modern technology, restrooms and showers, covered teaching labs, four utility trucks (both bucket and digger trucks), numerous utility poles of various sizes, underground utility training stations, hundreds of hand tools from various manufacturers, and all necessary electric utility hardware.

All Lineworker Bootcamps are currently held at the Sumter Campus in Sumterville.

Classes run Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm for ten consecutive weeks, including three weeks of CDL training.

Six times a year.

Each class accommodates a maximum of 15 students.

The bootcamp costs $8,550, which includes all training aspects, insurance, textbooks, handouts, safety gear, tools, equipment, lab training, CDL instruction, and up to two attempts at the CDL exam. Students are also provided with unlimited water and ice.

This class is not eligible for Pell Grants as it is not a traditional college credit class. However, it qualifies for the State of Florida CareerSource grant, which covers the entire cost if you meet the financial eligibility requirements. Your local CareerSource office can determine your eligibility. Students may also be eligible for a $1,500 scholarship from the Lake-Sumter State College Foundation. Private scholarships are accepted if they meet educational requirements.

Students must bring their CDL permit and DOT physical sheet. They must purchase their own protective-toed leather work boots. Once registered, students will receive specifications for the boots via email. Students should wear denim jeans and a long-sleeved work shirt to class and bring their own writing instruments and notepad.

Graduates will receive a Lineworker Bootcamp certificate, a Class A CDL (upon passing the exam), OSHA 10 safety and First Aid/CPR cards, DOT flagging certification, a current resume, and CAST prep training.
