Have a passion for fitness and want to help others with their fitness goals? It’s time to consider becoming a certified personal trainer! Lake-Sumter State College’s Continuing Education is offering a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) course in October at the Leesburg Campus.

The CPT course teaches students the knowledge, practice, and experience they will need in order to be successful in the fitness industry. Students receive 16 hours of online academic instruction and 16 hours of hands-on practical training. A required, 30-hour internship is provided at no additional cost.

The latest U.S. Department of Labor statistics forecast employment opportunities for personal trainers and group fitness instructors to increase 13% through 2022.

To apply for the CPT course, students must be at least 18 years old, have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, and obtain an adult CPR and AED certification before the end of the CPT course.

Students of all ages are encouraged to apply. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the average age of a personal training is 40 years old and that there was a 7% increase in personal trainers over the age of 40 between 2012 and 2013. NBCI research shows that 89% of personal trainers are certified.

The course is accredited through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), an industry leading standard for professional certification programs.
