Over 41,500 pounds to be distributed to students and community

The Lake-Sumter State College Foundation is continuing its partnership with Lake Cares Food Pantry to offer another drive-thru food distribution event on LSSC’s Leesburg Campus.

On Friday, October 16 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, LSSC students and members of the community can receive a 30+ pound box of pantry staples, fresh dairy, meat, and produce.

Students and families in the community participating should enter campus at College Drive from U.S. Highway 441. The address of the Leesburg Campus is 9501 U.S. Highway 441, Leesburg, 34788.

“We know that food insecurity is a significant issue for many of our students,” said Dr. Laura Byrd, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the LSSC Foundation. “The pandemic has made these issues more urgent and we are proud to be able to support our local community.”

Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau Household Pulse Survey conducted in September 2020, shows that 23 million households sometimes or often didn’t get enough to eat, including 1.95 million households in Florida.

The food boxes from this event is provided by the USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box program that has provided over 100 million food boxes nationally since May 2020.

Thanks to anonymous donors and a strong partnership with Lake Cares Food Pantry, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the USDA, the LSSC Foundation has provided 152,000 pounds of food to the local community at three events since May. This event will bring the total distributed to 193,500 pounds.
