Lake-Sumter State College students have a new transfer opportunity after completing their associate in arts degree – New College of Florida in Sarasota, the state’s Honors College.
New College is a member of the State University System of Florida.
Through this new agreement, any non-high school student who completes an A.A. degree within eight semesters of enrolling at LSSC and maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher is eligible for guaranteed admission to New College.
Transfer students who are admitted to New College receive generous guaranteed scholarships, making New College an efficient and cost-effective option for Florida A.A. completers. New College offers seamless academic pathways for students in a wide variety of disciplines, including biology, chemistry, economics, marine biology, and psychology.
“I speak for the entire Lake-Sumter State College community in sharing our excitement in accepting New College’s invitation to establish this agreement,” said Dr. Stan Sidor, LSSC President, at last month’s signing ceremony. “It is an honor to join you as a partner to develop and prepare intellectually curious students who will no doubt make a significant impact in their fields.”
Dr. Sidor and members of the College’s leadership traveled to the New College campus in Sarasota for a formal signing ceremony with New College President Dr. Patricia Okker.
This opportunity will be especially valuable to students in LSSC’s Honors Program. New College’s educational philosophy embraces active, hands-on learning to achieve both competence and mastery.
“With a student teacher ratio of just 6:1, New College presents an ideal transfer opportunity for LSSC Honors students, who thrive when presented with a challenging honors curriculum and know firsthand the benefits that come with small class sizes,” said Amber Karlins, coordinator of LSSC’s honor program and an assistant professor of English. “We are excited to have another transfer opportunity backed by scholarships for these highly motivated and well-performing students.”
“Together, we can prepare these students to challenge established boundaries and to discover, imagine or create new tools to solve the complex problems that face us today and in the future,” said Sidor.
New College of Florida has similar transfer agreements with Daytona State College, Florida SouthWestern State College, Hillsborough Community College, and State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota.
