“As we mourn the loss of Marcia Butler, our hearts go out to her husband, Al, and her family during this difficult time,” said Dr. Heather Bigard, Lake-Sumter State College President. “She truly believed in the transformative power of education and was an inspiration to many of us at LSSC.”

Throughout her years of service, Ms. Butler championed numerous initiatives that reshaped the landscape of Lake-Sumter State College. Her advocacy played a crucial role in the approval and implementation of the institution’s first baccalaureate program, the renaming to Lake-Sumter State College, and the establishment of the Health Sciences Collegiate Academy program. Additionally, she contributed to the projects that supported the construction of the Science-Health Partnership Building and the launch of the RN-BSN baccalaureate degree program.

Ms. Butler was also proud to have served as the Chairwoman for the Board’s Sumter Workforce Partnership Committee that provided guidance for enhancing educational programs throughout Sumter County.

In 2022, Ms. Butler was inducted into the Trustee Hall of Fame by the Lake-Sumter State College Foundation.

The life and legacy of Marcia Butler serves as a reminder of the profound impact that one individual can have on a community to impact future generations. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones, and we join together as a college community to honor the life of a trustee who truly made a difference.
