Your Path, Your Plan!
Academic Advisors help students navigate their educational journey by providing guidance on course selection, degree requirements, and academic planning. They assist students in setting and achieving academic goals, understanding institutional policies, and accessing campus resources.
Academic advising at Lake-Sumter State College is a collaborative partnership designed to help students clarify goals, choose the right courses, and stay on track from entry to completion. Advisors support students in developing clear academic plans that align with career interests, transfer goals, and Florida College System requirements.
All degree‑seeking students receive academic advising to support informed decision‑making, timely progression, and successful completion.
All incoming students who have not attended a college, university, or technical/vocational school, must complete New Student Advising & Registration (NSAR). This 90-minute group academic advising session provides essential information for new students and includes first-semester course registration.

Academic Pathways
Lake-Sumter State College uses meta-majors to help students explore fields of interest while making meaningful progress toward a degree or certificate.
Meta‑majors group related academic programs that share common foundational coursework. This approach supports early momentum, reduces excess credits, and aligns advising with gateway English and mathematics courses, consistent with Florida State Board of Education Rule 6A‑14.065.
Meta‑Majors
Academic programs are categorized into meta-majors based on their general areas of academic or career outcomes. Each meta‑major includes programs with related content and aligned gateway courses.
LSSC recognizes the following meta‑majors:
- Arts, Humanities, Communication, and Design
- Business
- Education
- Health Sciences
- Industry, Manufacturing, and Construction
- Public Safety
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
- Social and Behavioral Sciences and Human Services
Meta‑majors help students:
- Identify appropriate gateway English and mathematics courses
- Explore related programs before selecting a specific major
- Develop an academic plan aligned with academic and career goals.
Academic Advising and Planning
All degree‑seeking students are assigned an academic advisor who works with them to develop an academic plan. The academic plan outlines required coursework and provides a structured roadmap toward degree or certificate completion.
Advisors assist students with:
- Academic and career goal exploration
- Meta‑major and program selection
- Course planning and registration guidance
- Transfer planning and program prerequisites
- Monitoring academic progress and milestones
Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor early in their first term to establish an academic plan and to connect regularly throughout their enrollment.
Students Who Are Undecided
Students who are undecided about a specific major are advised within a meta‑major aligned to their general interests. This allows students to begin coursework that applies to multiple programs while continuing academic and career exploration.
Advisors help undecided students:
- Identify interests, strengths, and career goals
- Select appropriate gateway courses
- Transition from a meta‑major to a specific program of study
This structured exploration supports timely decision‑making without delaying progress toward completion.
Developmental Education and Gateway Courses
Students receive advising on developmental education options and gateway course placement, as applicable. Advisors explain how English and mathematics gateway courses align with each student’s chosen meta‑major and academic goals.
Students are advised of:
- Available developmental education options
- Gateway course requirements tied to their program or meta‑major
- Academic support services, including tutoring resources
This ensures students understand their options and are supported in progressing to college‑level coursework.
Our Commitment to Student Success
Academic Advising at LSSC is centered on student success, clarity, and completion. Advisors, faculty, and staff work together to provide consistent guidance and ensure students have the information and support needed to achieve their educational goals.
