Empower Your Future: Discover our Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Leadership Program

The Leaders in Training (LIT) Program empowers high school students (10th–12th grades) to translate their potential into actionable leadership skills that can inspire action and positive change in their communities. Participants gain real-world experience and build core competencies in mentoring and teamwork while completing 75+ public service hours and serving as essential role models for younger students during the summer. Applications for the summer program open in the Spring.

Overview

Are you a high school student (ages 15–18) looking to make a real impact this summer? The Leaders in Training (LIT) Program is designed for students entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grades who want to develop life-long, actionable leadership skills while achieving significant public service goals.

This program goes beyond theory, it’s a practical, work-oriented experience where you’ll build the competence to help both yourself and others identify and achieve meaningful goals.

Program Highlights

  • Earn Service Hours: Complete 75+ public service hours per two-week session.
  • Practical Leadership: Receive hands-on leadership development training and real-world experience.
  • Be a Role Model: Serve as an influential mentor and role model for younger students.
  • Work Experience: Gain valuable work-oriented volunteer experience to add to your resume and college applications.

Program Length

The program can be completed in two-week semesters. The 2026 dates are as follows:

June 8-18, 2026 ~ June 22-July 1, 2026 ~ July 6-16, 2026

Days/Times:
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Mondays - Thursdays

Students graduating from high school and enrolling at LSSC may qualify for other scholarships offered through the State of Florida. You will be notified of your eligibility after you apply to the College.

Outcomes

Earn 75+ hours of volunteer public service hours per session which can be used for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, job applications, college applications and other scholarships. This is a great way to learn how to become a leader in your community and assist in providing youth with an opportunity to explore their interests and learn new skills.  

LITs will have the opportunity to attend other events/programs at the college throughout the year for free or at a reduced rate. 

The LIT program is open to high school students entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade who are interested in developing their leadership skills, earning public service hours, and making a positive impact on their community. 

The LIT program offers comprehensive leadership development, including training in:

  • Building leadership skills
  • Peer mentoring and teambuilding
  • Conflict resolution
  • Serving as a role model for younger students

LIT participants can earn 75+ public service hours per Kids’ College semester. These hours are a valuable addition to college and scholarship applications.

The LIT program provides a work-oriented volunteer experience. You will have the opportunity to work with younger students in our Kids’ College program.

Absolutely! The LIT program is designed to be challenging, rewarding and enjoyable. You’ll have the chance to make new friends, learn new skills, and create lasting memories all while serving as a role model for younger students.

The LIT program takes place during the summer months. The specific dates and hours will be provided upon registration.

A student must have a high school diploma or GED to apply to Lake-Sumter State College.
