Mathematics Pathway
Empower Your Future: Math Pathways
Students at Lake-Sumter State College are supported throughout their academic journey in mathematics, from strengthening foundational skills to exploring advanced topics such as calculus and differential equations. Math courses at LSSC emphasize problem-solving, critical thinking, and mathematical reasoning, helping students build confidence and apply mathematics in meaningful, real-world contexts. A strong commitment to meeting students where they are ensures support for those overcoming math anxiety, strengthening core skills, or preparing for transfer or career advancement.
Most mathematics courses are offered in a variety of instructional formats, including face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online options. These flexible course offerings allow students to choose learning environments that align with their goals, schedules, and preferred learning styles, supporting accessibility and success throughout their coursework. Additionally, almost all math courses at LSSC use a third-party homework platform. On these platforms, students can practice problems multiple times, access additional practice, and use a variety of written, audio, and video content.
LSSC students also have access to free academic support through LSSC STEM Centers, including tutoring services designed to reinforce course content and promote long-term success.
Overview
Math courses at Lake-Sumter State College provide a strong foundation in mathematical skills for transfer and career preparation. Students are encouraged to select a mathematics pathway based on their academic and career goals.
Mathematical Thinking in Context
The Mathematical Thinking in Context Pathway is intended for students who are undecided about their degree program or for students who are not required to complete College Algebra, Trigonometry, or at least one Calculus course as part of their degree programs.
Statistical Reasoning
The Statistical Reasoning Pathway is intended for students who are required (or who elect) to complete a Statistics course as part of their degree program.
Algebra to Calculus
The Algebra to Calculus Pathway is intended for students required to complete College Algebra, Trigonometry, or at least one Calculus course as part of their degree programs. Students on this pathway are often in programs related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
Program Length
The program consists of 60 credit hours and can be completed in two years when attending full-time.
Program Cost
Tuition costs for programs and courses at the associate’s degree level are $109.73 per credit hour. Additional costs will include textbooks, materials, and course fees.

Financial Aid DetailsDevelopmental Math
Students may place directly into college-level math courses, or they may need to begin their studies in developmental mathematics. The State of Florida mandates successful completion (grades of A, B, or C) of all required developmental coursework for non-exempt students pursuing any degree or certificate, and prior to award of the degree or certificate. Grades earned in these courses are not figured into grade point average (GPA) calculations, and the credit hours for developmental courses do not count toward a degree or certificate.
Lake-Sumter State College offers one developmental math course for all students, MAT 0014 Math Fundamentals. In this course, students learn fundamental math concepts, including operations with integers, fractions, and decimals. They also learn about percents, solving equations, and graphing.
Mathematical Thinking
The Mathematical Thinking in Context Pathway is best suited for students in the Education, Public Safety, and Health Sciences pathways. It is also intended for students who are undecided about their degree program or for students who are not required to complete College Algebra, Trigonometry, or at least one Calculus course as part of their degree programs.
The courses students need on this pathway will be impacted by a student’s academic degree, placement scores, and previous math courses. Often, this pathway consists of the following courses.
MGF 1100 Introduction to Mathematical Thinking
In this course, students learn fundamental math concepts in geometry, conversions, statistics, and probability. The content in this course is designed to prepare students to take MGF 1130, MGF 1131, and STA 2023.
MGF 1130 Mathematical Thinking
In this course, students will utilize multiple means of problem-solving through student-centered mathematical exploration. Topics covered include geometry, logic, percent applications and conversions, statistics, and applications to math.
MGF 1131 Mathematics in Context
In this course, students will utilize multiple means of problem-solving through student-centered mathematical exploration. Topics include probability and statistics, personal finance, and graph theory.
Statistical Reasoning
The Statistical Reasoning Pathway is best suited for students who may be seeking degrees in business, the social and behavioral sciences, and human services. It is also intended for students who are undecided about their degree program or for students who are not required to complete College Algebra, Trigonometry, or at least one Calculus course as part of their degree programs.
The courses students need on this pathway will be affected by a student’s academic degree, placement scores, and previous math courses. Often, this pathway consists of the following courses.
MGF 1100 Introduction to Mathematical Thinking
In this course, students learn fundamental math concepts in geometry, conversions, statistics, and probability. The content in this course is designed to prepare students to take MGF 1130, MGF 1131, and STA 2023.
STA 2023 Elementary Statistics I
In this course, students explore elementary statistics content, including sampling, probability, distributions, hypothesis testing, and regression.
Selecting a math pathway and courses should be informed by a student’s major and transfer intent. Students should use their catalog, Degree Works, and transfer intent to determine what math courses they need.
A prerequisite course is a class that must be successfully completed before moving to the next level course.
Easy is subjective. The Mathematical Thinking in Context pathway incorporates a lot of “real-world” applications that are relevant to many different fields. The Statistical Reasoning pathway incorporates statistics and probability that may be new to students, while the Algebra to Calculus pathway may include some algebra content that students have studied previously.
Like most courses at Lake-Sumter State College, your math course may require computer work. This may include assignments in Canvas or a third-party homework platform such as MyLab or ALEKS.
Testing will be dependent on your class modality. You will want to reference the course syllabus as soon as you can to determine where you will test and whether you need certain technology to test.
