The College Reading & Learning Association’s International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) has awarded the LSSC Learning Center a Level 1 Tutor Training Certification.
The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring at the college level. CRLA’s overall purpose is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, methods, and information to improve student learning and to facilitate the professional growth of its members.

The ITTPC process sets an internationally accepted standard of skills and best practices for training tutors.
“The CRLA certification is an external validation of the quality of service our students experience in the Learning Centers,” says Katie Sacco, Dean of Library and Learning Services. “We’re proud that our tutor training program is now recognized as meeting international standards. In addition to academic proficiency, tutors in our Learning Center must receive a recommendation from an LSSC faculty member and attend specialized training.”
All tutors at the Learning Center complete an intensive training program:
- 25 hours of one-on-one independent tutoring sessions with observation checks
- 6 hours of interactive training
- 4 hours of online training in CRLA specified topics
- Training on Learning Center procedures, technology, and Learning Management Systems (Canvas)
- An evaluation by a Learning Center Manager
“With the CRLA certification, the training that our tutors receive extends beyond Lake-Sumter State College and provides tutors with a unique professional development opportunity through this internationally recognized standards program,” said Sacco.
