Student Emergency Assistance Programs

Student Affairs Emergency Response Team

The LSSC Students in Distress Guide offers clear and immediate steps for assisting students who are facing an emergency, crisis, or other urgent problem. During severe weather events, local emergencies, or community health crises, the Student Affairs Emergency Response Team serves as the College’s designated professional staff, connecting students and faculty with critical resources during times of crisis. This team is empowered to ensure that students in distress continue to have access to information, referrals and resources for support as long as they are needed. While they do not replace College offices or departments, the Student Affairs Emergency Response Team acts as a central connector, navigating complex situations that may require student advocacy across multiple offices, departments, or external agencies.

The scope of the Student Affairs Emergency Response Team’s role includes

  • Answering students’ academic and administrative questions during emergency periods
  • Providing counseling referrals to the Student Assistance Program (SAP)
  • Providing referrals to college support resources (Learning Center, tutoring, Libraries, SAS, etc.)
  • Connecting students with critical campus and community resources
  • Serving as a liaison between students, faculty, and external partners for complex situations

The scope of the Student Affairs Emergency Response Team’s role does not include

  • Giving legal advice
  • Giving medical advice
  • Interfering with law enforcement
  • Excusing academic absences
  • Altering or overriding academic policy or procedure

LSSC Foundation Student Emergency Grant Program

LSSC’s Emergency Assistance grant program provides small emergency assistance grants to currently enrolled students.

These grants are designed to assist with a one-time, unexpected event that causes an acute financial emergency and meets the following criteria:

  • A situation that is unlikely to re-occur;
  • When no other financial resources are available;
  • The need can be documented

Examples of such emergencies may include but are not limited to: a loss due to fire or weather event, theft or accident, unexpected medical/dental expense, personal automobile expense, or a sudden, unavoidable interruption of income. Emergency grants cannot be used for tuition & fees, legal fees, tobacco/alcohol, entertainment expenses, credit card debt, or debt owed to the College.

Emergency Assistance is available to students who experience an acute and unexpected short-term hardship. Award decisions will be made based on the applicant’s individual situation and one-time grant awards are subject to limitations (maximum $1,000). Funding for this assistance comes from the LSSC Foundation. The student is not responsible for any type of repayment for the money awarded.
